Bowflex Dumbbells Review

Adjustable dumbbells are nothing new because they been on the market for over 50 years, but things changed in 2003 when the new home workout craze started with the launch of the P90X. It changed the way adjustable dumbbells were made. Over the last 13 years there are now many different types of adjustable dumbbells that you can purchase.

It certainly can be confusing when trying to select the best adjustable dumbbells. When we consider the options that range from StairMaster or PowerBlock to Bayou Fitness and MTN Gearsmith, the Bowflex dumbbells seem to offer the quickest way to lighten or increase the dumbbell weight.

Unlike the regular weight plate/screw-collar configuration of normal adjustable dumbbells, the Bowflex offers a knob-adjusted variety, where a simple dial is twisted to increase or decrease the weight you want to lift. These additional weights will rest in weight trays so when you lift the selected weight, the unused weights will be left behind on the trays.

In 2016 a review was done comparing the many different adjustable dumbbell options available. It is important to note that the dumbbells tested were done using both stand-alone strength D/B exercises as well as conditioning exercises. The Bowflex SelectTechs was rated on top and the used instead of the knob-adjusted 445s from Universal Power-Pak because the Bowflex was a lot more popular.

The Bowflex SelectTech 552s which has a weight selection range from 5 to 52.5 pounds showed the best results in the review, there is also a Bowflex SelectTech 1090s available that start at 10lbs and go all the way up to 90 pounds.

Bowflex dumbbells comes with a detailed DVD that explains exactly how to use what they call the "4-step rep" protocol showing you how to use tension throughout the movements listed. The DVD also includes a detailed demonstration on exactly how to perform 30 different movements, both strength building and conditioning exercises.

The comprehensive DVD that comes with any Bowflex purchase also includes a 6-minute safety tutorial demonstrating perfect technique when picking up your dumbbells from a stand that is purchased separately, as well as directly from the floor.

The Bowflex DVD also demonstrates proper hip-hinge motion, foot alignment and flat-back positions required to ensure safety when doing the 30 different movements listed. The DVD also has tips on showing how to maximize lifespan of the dumbbells by showing you how to bench safely using Bowflex SelectTechs to minimize the chances of dropping your dumbbells on the floor.
